Next week

Hello everyone,

Next week we have a special week! On Wednesday we have the Grote Rekendag (see the blog post on Grote Rekendag for homework) and on Thursday we have a skipping workshop. We have told the children that they can come to school wearing sports clothes if they want to. The skipping will take place outside and should be a lot of fun!

Spelling: Could you please try to encourage your child to do their spelling homework every day. They would benefit a lot from this!

Numeracy: we will be working on fractions, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to solve multiplication problems and finding specified multiples; introduce the × sign; record the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables; investigate multiplications with the same answer; write multiplications to go with arrays, rotate arrays to show they are commutative.

Literacy: We will finish the Magic Finger. We are writing stories focussing on chronological structure and expressing time (first, when, before, after, while, next.. ). Our main focus in writing is capital letters and full stops. This week we have worked hard on this and we will continue doing that next week. We will describe our favourite part of the book. Write a different ending to the book and write about our own passion.

IPC: Airports and airplanes! We are going to design and present our own in-flight entertainment pack. We will write about our product and explain why our pack is perfect for airlines. We will also finish our airport statues that we have made today (they look really cool so far!) and will preform safety instructions.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Grote Rekendag

Dear Children,
As you will have read in the Newsletter, next Wednesday is Grote Rekendag. For next week we would like you to complete 2 Home Activities.
For the first activity, we would like you to take a picture of yourself standing next to the number of your house. You must bring your photo into school by Wednesday. You can bring it into school sooner if you wish.
For the second activity, we would like you to create a presentation about a number that is special to you. Please only choose one number since we will be doing this in class as well. Include reasons for why it is special to you. Examples could include:
– How many animals you have
– The year that you were born
– Your weight in Kg
– You foot size
– Your lucky number
– The age of one of your parents
We would like you to be creative in the way that you present your number and reasons. You will be presenting to the rest of the class and Year 3 so your presentation needs to entertain! For example, you may choose to write a song or rap about your special number. Think outside the box and be as creative as you like. Make models, artwork, dance routines. Anything you like!
You can bring the second activity into school ready to present anytime during next week. We look forward to seeing your presentation.
Mr & Mrs Scragg, Miss Wiseman, Miss Frances and Miss van Schijndel.

Schiphol trip on the 29th of March

Hello everyone,
EDIT: The date for our trip to Schiphol has changed due to the Grote Rekendag. We will now go the 29th of March

On March 29nd as part of our IPC unit, ‘Runways to the world’, Year 2 will be visiting Schiphol airport where they will take part in a Schiphol behind the scenes tour. This will help them to bring their recent learning to life. They will get to visit previously unseen places, just as the fire station and VIP landing area. More information about the tour can be found at, http://www.schipholbehindthescenes.nl/en/

The children will be departing from Breda station and should be brought directly there at 8:45. We will meet in front of the ticket office. They will be ready to be collected at Breda station at 14:15.
This information will also be in the next newsletter and we will send home a letter for you to sign.
Have a lovely day!

Incas week

Hello everyone,

We hope you all had a lovely holiday! The children were very excited to start again today.

This week we have the incas which means we do not do numeracy, literacy and phonics. The children will do their incas assessments in small groups with miss Frances. The rest of the children will work on IPC in the classroom. We have some nice IPC projects planned for this week such as designing our own airport, composing questions for our special guest (Bedirhan’s mum is coming tomorrow to tell us about her work) and making a video about the Netherlands. We will still do PE, Dutch, SEAL and music.

Have a good week!

Frances and Monique

Last week before the holiday!

Hello everyone,

Literacy: for literacy we will write a diary entry, discuss different words and phrases that we can use, predict what might happen next, evaluate different viewpoints and compose questions for an interview.

Numeracy: for numeracy we will continue working with money, 3d shapes and the time.

IPC: airplanes and airports! We will design a flight attendants uniform, design an inflight meal and look at different airports.

There will be no spelling homework this week. On Thursday we will give out the new spelling sheet for after the holiday.

We have been working on our carnival song “toe toe toeter op mijn waterscooter”. We had a vote and more than half of the class voted for this song! Madelief from year 6 came in and showed us how to dance to the song. If you want to practice you could have a look at this link.

This week

Hello everyone!

This week we are learning more about airports. We will make posters for places we would like to visit. We have found information and will start our posters tomorrow. We will also design our own airline logos and talk about the different jobs that are carried out at the airport.

On Friday we will do our numeracy assessments. This week we will revise all the things we have work on since the holiday. 3D shapes, bigger than, smaller than, putting numbers in order, working with money, addition and subtraction.

For literacy we will write about our own experience, we will have discussions, a debate and act out scenes of the book. Our new book, The Magic Finger, is great and it links nicely to our SEAL lessons. Today the main character got really angry and we discussed what she could have done instead. The children had great ideas about that and spoke about times they got angry and how they could have solved it a different way.

A big thanks to the parents that have signed the acceptable use agreement that we sent home on Friday. The parents that have not signed it yet, could you please do this? We have had a talk in class about how to use the computer and the internet and how to be safe and responsible. It would be good if you could have a chat with your child about this at home as well and than send back the signed agreement.
Thank you, Frances and Monique

News by year 2

Hello all!

Next week it is year 2’s turn to make the international news display. We have spoken to the children about it and they are quite excited to write about the news.
Can your help your child to find a news article, make a poster or write about a news article, which they have found interesting? This is optional of course but it would be really nice if we can fill up the display with lovely drawings and writing.

Please bring this to school with you on Monday 30th January. You can help your child but it should be their own work.

For literacy we will be working on the Hodgeheg, we will write a letter to a Tiggywinkles (an animal hospital where they rescue hedgehogs!) write about one of the characters of the book, predict the ending and retell the story. We will also talk about nouns. What are nouns? What nouns do we know?

Numeracy: We will be working on 3D shapes. We will identify and describe the properties of 3D shapes including the number of edges, vertices and faces. Identify 2D shapes on the surface of 3D shapes; for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid. Compare and sort common 3D shapes and everyday objects. Order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects, including 2D and 3D shapes, in repeating patterns and sequences

IPC: This is the last week we will be learning about water. We will try different types of water and do another cool experiment with filtering water.

Thank you! Frances and Monique

Happy 2017!

First of all a very happy new year to all of you!

We hope you had a lovely holiday. Frances is not in this week so miss Saint will be with us for some days. Here the highlights of our short week:

Literacy: This week we will start our new book called “The Hodgeheg”. It’s a great book about a hedgehog that turns things around. Today we have talked about hedgehogs and it turns out that we have some real hedgehog experts in year 2! We know all about how the hedgehog in Gaelle’s garden ate the mushrooms when she was little ;). We talked about the things we would like to find out about them and what we already know. We will read bits of the story, discuss what we have read and make predictions. We will re-enact some scenes and write in the role of Max (the hedgehog).

Numeracy: In numeracy we will work on place value and ordering 2-digit numbers, place value additions and subtractions, adding and beginning to subtract 9, 10 and 11.

IPC: We will start a new topic called “On tap”. We will start this tomorrow by making our own “waterworks”. We will post pictures of this on instagram! We will brainstorm and discuss where water from the tap comes from and where it goes when it disappears down the plughole.

SEAL: We have worked on the differences and similarities between us and our friends. The children came up with great similarities like “we both like numeracy”, “we have the same teacher” or “we both have glasses”.

Have a lovely week!

Frances and Monique

Almost December!

Hi everyone,

We cannot wait for December! We have wrapped presents, sang lots songs, made Americo (Sinterklaas’ horse) and read books about Sinterklaas. Meanwhile we are also working on our Christmas concert where year 2 will sing Rudolph the red nosed reindeer!

For literacy we will write a letter of complaint, make drawings to go with our script, work on a comic book page and much more!

Numeracy: We will continue working on doubles and adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. Besides that we will also work on using Carroll diagrams and Venn diagrams which most children find tricky.

IPC: We have planned great investigations with Brett and Laura this week that we will carry out next week. Some of us are going to blow up balloons with small and big straws, others are going to drop two balloons, one with water and one filled with air, and measure which one hits the floor first. We will put pictures on instagram so you can see the results! We will also work on magnetism and find things in our class (and outside) that are magnetic.

Have a great long weekend!

Frances and Monique

Hi everyone!

This week is a short week since there is a teacher training day on Friday.

For numeracy we will be working on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers; solving addition and subtraction problems using concrete and pictorial representations; adding near doubles to double 15; adding several small numbers spotting near doubles or pairs to 10, etc.

Literacy. This week we will finally find out how the book ends! We will predict endings and than read the last pages of the book. We will be working on retelling the story in sequence, using story language and we will finish our diaries that we are writing from the perspective of the princess. We will also write a conversation in script form and act it out afterwards.

IPC. We are going to learn about air resistance and investigate if air can also push things. We will also make kites and hopefully take them outside! We will predict which kite will stay in the air for the longest amount of time. The biggest one or the smallest one?

We would like to wrap presents just like Sint and Piet do. If you have some cardboard boxes, could you please take them to school? Even the small tea boxes are perfect! No worries if you do not have them, I will go and buy new shoes and drink lots of tea this weekend ;).

Have a great weekend!

Frances and Monique
