Hello everybody,

The weather has certainly taken a turn this week and it is getting much colder.  I hope you have all managed to stay warm and cosy.  Despite this change in the weather we have still be going to play outside regularly.  Your child is given the opportunity to play outside regularly throughout the day in addition to break time and lunch time.  Please make sure that they come to school appropriately dressed with a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves/mittens.

We have continued with our work on Biscuit Bear.  We made our own biscuit bears but unfortunately they were eaten by Bongo the dog (which is exactly what happens in the story!) however we still managed to decorate and eat some biscuits despite them not being bear shaped.

This weekend Sinterklaas will be arriving in Breda.  He arrives on his steam boat from Spain with his assistants Zwarte Pieten with lots of pepernoten (small spiced biscuits) for the children.  It is a fantastic experience that shouldn’t be missed.  We have been talking about his arrival in our Dutch lesson this week.

Wishing you all a pepernoten filled weekend,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

Welcome back after the holidays.  It feels good to be back into the school routine again.  I hope that you all have a fantastic holiday and are ready for the next half term.

This week we have started a new IPC topic ‘All About Me’ and a new Power of Reading book ‘Biscuit Bear’.  Next week we are hoping to make our own biscuit bears and we are hoping that Bongo the Dog will not eat them!  In numeracy this week we talked about height and length and also about capacity (full, half full and empty).

This week the children from Year 3 came to read a story to us in Dutch about a very busy spider.  We enjoyed it so much we asked them to read it twice.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Miss Johnson.

Happy October holidays everybody!

What a great first half term we have had in Reception!  I think that most of the children are ready for a break and I hope that they are looking forward to coming back to school on 31st October.

This week we celebrated Kinderboekenweek.  It was such good fun especially on Monday when we came to school in our pyjamas and on Friday we we dressed up as grandparents.  Thank you to all of the mums and grandparents who were able to come into school and read to us.  The children really enjoyed it.

This week we finished our IPC topic about Food.  After the holiday we will start our next topic All About Me.  We also finished our work around the book Tanka Tanka Skunk this week and will be starting our work on Biscuit Bear after the holidays.

I hope that you all have a fantastic break and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Kind regards,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

Once again we have had another fun week.  We have continued to enjoy Tanka Tanka Skunk and are now experts in clapping out syllables.

Today we will be making a sandwich as part of our IPC Food topic.

Next week will be kinderboekenweek and the theme is oma en opa.  On Mnday we are all coming to school wearing pyjamas ready for a bedtime story in the morning.  On Friday we are all coming to school dressed as a oma (grandma) or opa (grandpa) and taking part fun activities.  During the week we have omas and opas coming in to read to us.  We also have some parents who have volunteered.  If you would like to come and read a story to us (in any language) please let us know – we would be very happy for us to join us.  So far we have 2 Dutch grandparents, a French mum and an American mum.

From Monday onwards we will be insisting that the children wear their welly boots every time they go outside.  These will be their outdoor shoes.  If your child does not have welly boots in school please send some as soon as possible.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

I have a couple of friendly reminders.

The reception door opens at 8:40am.  The school day starts at 8:45am.  The register is taken at 8:45am and then lessons begin straight after.  Please make sure that your child is in school by 8:45am to ensure that they, and others, do not miss out on valuable learning time.

The weather is now much colder.  Please send your child to school in suitable clothing especially a warm coat and hat.  The children have access to the outdoors throughout the day so it is really important that they stay warm and dry.

Kind regards,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

We have once again had another great week.  Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend the parent meetings.  I will see everybody else next week.

This week we moved on from Handa’s Surprise to Tanka Tanka Skunk.  This is a fun book which focuses on rhythm and syllables.  We have enjoyed tapping out syllables in the animal names.  In numeracy we focused on counting and talked about how to count accurately.

In IPC we have continued our topic on food by looking at packaging.  We made a popcorn cone and popped our own corn to eat in our own cinema.  Today we talked about how cheese is made and tried 3 different cheeses.  It has been a yummy week.

This afternoon we will be going for our weekly library slot and will end the day with Rhyme Time.  Please come along if you can.

Some of you are aware that I got engaged last Saturday whilst standing on a mountain in England!  Thank you for your congratulations and best wishes.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

I would like to start by saying a big thank you to all of the parents who were able to come to Rhyme Time.  It was so nice to see so many faces.  I didn’t realise what talented singers you all were!  Please come again next week if you can.  It was lovely to see the smiles on the children’s faces when their parent walked in.  Rhyme Time will take place every Friday at 2:30pm.

This week we have finished our work on the book Handa’s Surprise.  We have been learning to say the book off by heart with help from a story map.  We performed the book, along with nursery, for Year 1, Year 3 and Miss Everson all of whom were very impressed.  As a surprise for us Handa left us a basket of tangerines which the children were very excited about.

I have given each child a Bear Words sheet and a set of laminated Bear 1 Words.  The children need to learn to read these words.  They will need to be read in a random jumbled up order.  It would also be helpful if the children understood the meaning of the words.  Once per week we will check how the children are getting on with their words.  Once they have learnt them all they will get a certificate in assembly and will be given the next set of words.  There are 9 sets of Bear Words.

Today we went to the library.  We will go to the library every Friday.  Children need to have their library book in their book bag on a Friday if they wish to change their library book.

I wish you all a fun weekend.

Kind regards,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

We have had another fun week in Reception.  We have been exploring autumn leaves and conkers using these to help us with our numeracy by talking about their size and counting them.  We have continued to look at Food in IPC and Handa’s Surprise in literacy.  The children are now able to recall Handa’s Surprise independently using our story map.

Each child no has a reading eggs and mathletics login and password stuck in the front of their reading diary.  Please have a go at logging in and exploring the sites.  Let me know if you have any problems.

Please take time to read with your child as frequently as possible – everyday would be great.  After you ave read please write a small comment in their reading diary.  It could be their reading book, library book or books that you have at home.  We will change their reading book once per week (different days each week) and their library book every Friday.  Thank you to everybody who as been bringing in their book bag everyday.

Next week we will be starting Rhyme Time.  This is a weekly session for parent to come and sing with their children.  Please come along.  We will start at 2:30pm.  Please feel free to bring younger children with you.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody,

What amazing weather we have had this week!  The children have had another great week.  Many children have chosen to spend their free choice time outdoors making sandcastles and enjoying the bikes.

Today we went on our first visit to the library along with Nursery.  The children each chose a book to take home.  We will visit the library every Friday so please make sure that the children bring their library books back at the end of every week.

We have a class teddy bear whose name is Lucy Bear.  The children named her.  Today she chose somebody who has been well behaved all week to take her home for the weekend.  Each Friday she will chose a new child to go home with.  Lucy Bear is to aid speech, language and communication skills along side social skills.  I am looking forward to hearing what she gets up to this weekend.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and manage to make the most of the last bit of sunshine before Autumn arrives.

Kind regards,

Miss Johnson.

Hello everybody and welcome to Reception!

We have had a fantastic first 3 days in reception.  The children have all settled well.  Thank you for your support in preparing them for moving to a new class.

Yesterday each child took home a reading book and a reading diary.  Please take time to share this book as often as you can.  These are picture books and have no words.  Have a look at the pictures together and talk about what you can see.  Use this information to make up a story together.  What does your child think will happen next?  Can they predict the ending?

We have a whole school focus on Healthy Body, Healthy Mind.  As part of this we have been talking about have a healthy snack and a healthy packed lunch.  Thank you for sending such healthy lunch boxes and for swapping cake and crisps for yogurt and fruit.  To link to this we will be focusing on ‘Food’ in IPC and looking at the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’ in Literacy.

I hope you all have a lovely week and make the most of the sunshine.

Kind regards,

Miss Johnson.
